Somerset is located in Perry County. A village of about 1,500, the town is located about ten miles north of the Perry County seat, which is New Lexington. Somerset is the home of the oldest Catholic Church in Ohio, Saint Joseph Church. St. Joseph is located just outside the village on State Route 383. In 1810, immigrants from Somerset, Pennsylvania, established the village. The village was named in honor of their home, which was located along Zane’s Trace, at a midway between Zanesville and Lancaster. Perry County was formed about seven years later with land from Fairfield, Muskingum, and Washington counties. In 1819, officials in the town built their first courthouse in Somerset. Ten years later, however, a more permanent courthouse was built there in the town square. Because New Lexington grew tremendously from 1851 and 1859, the Ohio legislature moved the county seat to its current location. Later, the old courthouse was leased to the village to use as a town hall.
